Being a former special education teacher, I am always looking for strategies, tools, etc. to assist and meet student needs. As a regular education teacher, I permit my students to work in areas that they are comfortable to assist with on-task behaviors, but I am limited due to restrictions placed upon by the district and desks that are not able to be changed. Students can only work at desks, tables, or on the floor at this point.
Having the option to use standing desks during class can provide students with choices on where they learn best, as well as having a chance for movement during class time to assist with on-task behaviors and allow movement to become a normal part of the day without any interruption. This should allow for a greater focus on completing tasks within a time frame, as well as allowing the students a greater chance of confidence to be a positive and productive member of our classroom. The desk helps the child to stay organized and to self-regulate when an adjustment is required. Also, children with attention issues are provided with opportunities to alleviate fidgeting for greater mental clarity, less physical pain, and better health in general.
