We have a quote in our classroom to remind us of our connection to one another. It is a Zulu proverb, Ubuntu, that loosely translated means: "I am a person through other people, my humanity is tied to yours." We work everyday in our room to make this proverb a reality for every person in the room, young and old(er). As students represent a range of cultural backgrounds-Dominican Republic, Nigeria (Igbo and Yoruba), Cape Verde, Haiti, Italy, Ireland, and Puerto Rico-it is important that we practice Ubuntu everyday. My students' interpretation of this proverb, and how to manifest it everyday, is something from which we all can learn. Whether we are discussing a challenging math equation, sharing our thoughts about a complex text, or simply sharing events from our weekend, we know that our humanity (and success) is dependent on the success of everyone in the room.
