Learning to print using a 3D printer will allow students to build models that aid them in their learning. Students will be able to design models and print them. Students will be able to develop a model based on evidence to illustrate the relationships between systems or between components of a system. (HS-PS1-8) They will also be able to use a model to predict the relationships between systems or between components of a system (HS-PS1-1). These students will gain valuable critical thinking and problem solving skills plus learn to use a tool that is growing in popularity and use throughout the world. Being able to use 3D printers will help students grow and develop their Science and Engineering Practices to a greater depth than ever before. These Science and Engineering Practices are covered throughout the school year in science and having a 3D printer will help students truly understand and hone these standards to a level they would not be able to achieve without the use of 3D printers.
The goals I have written for this project will enable students to not just understand the Science and Engineering Practices, but will also give students the opportunity to expand and learn skills that will help them throughout their educational, personal and professional lives.
Students with these skills will stand head and shoulders above their peers and know how to use a 3D printer which is a marketable skill.
