Our wonderful students have various needs and disabilities; they all fall within the Autism Spectrum. These students would greatly benefit from new and safe gym equipment that assists them during gym and physical fitness activities. Some of our students have mobility issues which impact their participation in both daily living skills and physical education activities.
We need access to equipment that really assists these children to build and improve their fine and gross motor skills as well as improve in their mobility skills.
These students struggle with activities we take for granted such as running, jumping, climbing, walking up/down stairs, catching objects; during my gym period we work on building these skills during structured activities. My students not only have fun while improving motor and mobility skills but they also learn turn-taking, playing on a team, cooperation, socialization, and practicing receptive and expressive communication skills! Our activities include playing soccer, basketball, obstacle courses, functional fitness activities, and relay races!
Our students return back to their classrooms ready to take on their day! Their teachers continue to express satisfaction with how calm and attentive various students are after returning to their classroom after gym along with a decrease in behaviors. They attend lessons better and also feel a sense of accomplishment and pride.
