Our school is a public middle school in an urban area of California with 550 students in grades 6-8. Fifty-six percent of the student population receives free and priced lunch. It is a diverse school that is 11% Asian, 19% Latino, 30% African American, 25% Caucasian, and 15% other. Over 33 languages are represented by our student population and their families. In the past 5 years, the school has increased our API score by 150 points, and even though the achievement gap has been decreased, there is still a 200 point difference between the highest and lowest performers. In addition to academics, students participate in a wide range of after school activities from tutoring to athletics to clubs. More than 40% of the students are on 17 sports teams. About 100 students are enrolled in music/band classes. Our drama troupe has more than 40 students involved in putting on school productions. Many students are also engaged in one of our other interest clubs: film, chess, mentoring, etc.
