My 9th graders attend W.E.B. DuBois High School in Northeast Baltimore City. In contrast to many of the new charter schools that students are able to compete and get into in Baltimore, DuBois is a neighborhood school, but also a default school for students who have been rejected by schools throughout the city. We also support a large population of students with special learning needs and emotional disturbances.
Many of my children are extremely bright and show wonderful potential when I can find a way to connect them to curriculum material and engage them. My students also respond incredibly well to positive reinforcement and praise, as many have experienced heartbreaking setbacks and failures in the past. Together, my students and I have spent our first month breaking a cycle of negativity and failure with a string of positive learning experiences and through trust. We've also set ambitious and meaningful reading and writing goals for the year that will guide our daily actions.
