In 2009, we were identified by the New York Times as the most diverse school district in the United States. Our students are proud of that, and welcome newcomers. The newcomers to our classes have often come from refugee camps in unstable parts of the world. And to add to our challenges, our school has over 10% of our students living in a situation defined as homeless. They crave stability and yet relish learning.
We are the only middle school in our district, which means we are the place all of the elementary schools funnel to. Students make friendships in our hallways and classrooms that become foundational to them as they move onto High School together. The overall culture of our school is supportive and safe.
