My students are fifth grade students who are just being introduced to historical fiction in a way that stirs emotion. We have started to read the mentor text Number the Stars and the students are responding well to the story. We have practiced book club discussions based on the mentor text and I can tell that they are ready for their own books for their clubs. They are ready to initiate their own discussions on books that they have read.
