Young children need to see snapshots of themselves in literature to develop a sense of self. This project will provide us with numerous pieces of quality literature that showcases different cultures, races and families. Students will recognize their families in these rich stories and be able to create their own stories, pictures, projects with multicultural art supplies.
According to The International Literacy Association, "Children have the right to read texts that mirror their experiences and languages, provides windows into the lives of others, and open doors into our diverse world."
The literature in this project will offer numerous springboards for conversations and connections in my first grade classroom. Firsties will naturally chat about customs and celebrations, as well as learn about their peers. The art supplies will provide students the materials to express their feelings and share their cultures with colors that mirror skin tone, building confidence along the way. By seeing themselves in these texts, students will become more engaged readers and writers.
