Often times as a teacher I find that writing is one of the biggest challenges for my fourth graders. Often as teachers we assign and teach the mandated writing projects but often the love of writing is lost in all of the requirements because our students see writing as as hard work more than a rewarding task. Research shows that when students have a choice in things like their writing tools and are encouraged to use their creativity and voice throughout their pieces they enjoy writing so much more. The goal is to create confident writers that truly enjoy the art of writing.
As students are required to write for a variety of purposes, it's important to foster a love of writing for themselves above all. With these supplies organized in a central area in our classroom, students will be able to choose their writing tool, colored paper, decorate their own author's notebook, create a comic-book story, or send a thank you card to a grandparent. Although it may seem a little trivial, it's essential that children at this age use their creativity and voice throughout the daily writing routines. These supplies will definitely be a great start on our road to successful writing in 4th grade.
