Our classroom runs on the workshop model, and students spend a significant amount of time each day gathered on "the rug," participating in a focus lesson, listening to a story, working on projects with partners, or reading independently. The rug area provides comfortable natural boundaries for students to gather and work, adding to the sense of community as we grow and learn. It is also just a little more comfy than sitting on the hard commercial carpet that is glued onto our concrete floor. Some might think it's a luxury, but if you ask my students, I think they'll say it's a necessity.
The braid rug we currently use has had a stellar classroom career and has supported many a second grader in literacy, but it is in its death throes. It spent 10 years in my home before spending 10 more years in my classroom. Each year for the past several years I've rounded up family and friends to have a rug-mending party, trying to eke some more use out of it, but time's up. We need a new rug.
