In a typical school day, students can spend between five and six hours being asked to sit still at a desk during instruction. For teenagers with growing bodies, this request can become just one more thing they are trying to focus on doing during a typical class period. For students with attention deficit difficulties or other learning disabilities, it can seem impossible. My goal is to create a classroom environment that is suitable for every different type of learner. Having a variety of options for students to maximize their learning by making their bodies most comfortable would undoubtedly increase their academic potential. For some students, all that's needed to help increase their focus are simple fidget toys to keep their hands busy during instruction. Others may benefit from bands attached to traditional desks to accompany their tapping feet. Students may also prefer to move while they sit on alternative seats like Hokki stools or balance balls. There are also learners who prefer to stand and work that may benefit from using a balance board while they work. It all boils down to students entering my classroom and feeling comfortable, motivated and even getting a little bit of exercise. I can't wait to bring students into my room knowing they will have one less thing to worry about in my class!
