In my first year of teaching reading, I noticed a strong connection between students choosing their seating (on the floor, across their desks, or even in my chair) and reading focus, stamina, and engagement! I want to offer my students the opportunity to move about the room to more comfortable/moveable seating options that will further increase that focus and stamina. I have chosen beanbag high-back chairs, wobble stools, and exercise-type balls as options for students to use. The exercise balls and wobble stools will be perfect for students who need to keep moving while reading. They can wobble in their seat, bounce on their seat, or choose to lie across the balls in a variety of positions. The beanbag chairs provide a comfortable floor-like option that will allow students to move away to an individual area of the classroom. I additionally have added a couple of jumbo beanbag chairs as students enjoy reading back-to-back and lounging in them while reading.
Your generous donation to our 6th grade reading classroom project will allow students a variety of seating options to increase reading focus and stamina--which will lead to better engagement and build stronger, avid lovers of reading!
While some think flexible seating is more of an elementary thing, I would argue that very few adults choose a solid chair and desk for their own reading experience. I not only want my students reading, I want them to love reading, and I firmly believe providing them options to reading in their desks will allow them to see reading in a more engaging and less restrictive light.
