I wish I were as talented as my students. I have an artist. He can draw anything you show him. Another can remember locations (with addresses) he looks up in map apps. Another student is a drummer, many of my students love music! Another student remembers where everything goes and puts things back in place, notices when something needs to be done and what order it was done in before. One student has his own cell phone and can find you tube videos of songs he likes.
This may seem normal, but half of my class can't talk, and none of them can manage in a traditional class, or even a traditional self contained class. Any tiny variation in the class routine could set off an anxiety attack or tantrum that could last all day.
Our school is the most accepting school I have ever encountered. It is a high school with a number of vocational programs. It has a smaller attendance than other nearby schools, but the students and staff take us as we are.
