In my two years of teaching first grade students, I have researched flexible seating and implemented a limited amount of flexible seating choices in my classroom. During those two years, I discovered the positive impact that differential seating can have on my students and the shift in their focus when they are given the opportunity to sit in an area different from the traditional classroom setting.
One of the main reasons I created this project was to allow my students to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.
As a teacher, I want to give students the option to choose a comfortable seat choice that will help engage their bodies and minds to tasks throughout our long day. First grade is a fundamental year for not only academics, but also emotional, developmental, physical, and social growth. Flexible seating such as tables, stools, and floor cushions will allow students to take on responsibility for themselves and their choices, create a more collaborative environment between peers, allow them the necessary movement they need throughout the long school day, and will allow their bodies and minds to be engaged in the learning.
Thank you for reading about my students and the project I have designed for them. I would be nothing without them and I feel fortunate to be an advocate for their development and learning.
