The requested writing center for our classroom enhances learning processes. Our school serves at-risk Pre-K children under title one status. Children learn through a play based curriculum, learning while they play. Our classroom includes several play centers, including Blocks, Dramatic Play, Science, Music, Library and Manipulative Play. However, we lack a quiet place for children to work on beginning writing skills. Writing gives children a chance to strengthen fine muscle skills, and learn the early fundamentals of forming letters. Pre-writing skills are essential in assuring young children hold and move a pencil while producing legible writing. Research shows that children benefit from having multiple opportunities throughout the day for developing fine motor skills and finger dexterity using a variety of writing implements. This writing center will provide my children the resources necessary for practicing and developing fundamental writing skills in preparation for Kindergarten and beyond.
