Our school is located in a "bedroom" community between two large cities. Many of our students come from homes where one or both parents have long commutes to work in heavy traffic. Students' days begin early and end late. We have many, many military families which makes our community very transient.
Parents have high expectations for their children's education. Our community population is growing much faster than we can afford to build schools. Each year our classroom sizes grow until we are almost bursting at the seams. Despite this rapid growth, the annual budget given to the schools is being cut by an average of 17 million dollars a year making it next to impossible to replace old, damaged, out-of-date materials.
Last year my students went through 4 sets of headphones and two CD players. The listening center is an important part of our daily literacy block. Children are given the opportunity to curl up with a good book and listen to a variety of literature.
