As first graders are learning to read, it is important that they hear reading aloud so they will learn new vocabulary, reading with expression and new words, as well and sentence structure, spelling and punctuation. A listening center in my classroom would help to promote reading independence and growth and would allow students to chose what they like to read/listen to and will allow students to choose books at their instructional or independent level. A listening center with books on CD will add a significant learning station to my classroom which will encourage lower level students to interact with books.
