My school is in the inner city of Kansas. It's not just farmers! We have many immigrants and hard workers that move their families here for a better life. It's my job to teach their children! My school is in a high poverty(and crime) area with about 80% Hispanics w/little english and 10% Asian and Hmong and the rest are white. I am their 2nd grade teacher, counselor, ESL & special ed teacher and sometimes fulfill other needs because it is just in me to do more. These kiddos are great! They are talented and smart and want to learn so much of this new place and language. They all want to learn English and go to college to make a ton of money. :) They teach me everyday about what their life is like and what they know about their culture. I am bilingual so I am able to speak Spanish to them and I share with them how I learned English and that it is a goal that can be achieved. I am their example of a Hispanic that worked hard and went to college. Some say they will be a teacher some day!
