My class includes 25 second and third graders from diverse backgrounds. Some of the students speak English as a second language, and half of all our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. A large number of my students are experiencing unprecedented trauma-related incidents. Despite their differences, all of my students show up to school each day, eager to enter the safe haven I have created for them. The majority come to school each day filled with a zest for life and are eager and ready to learn. Fostering resilient mindful learners by focusing on social and emotional learning is imperative.
