Middle school can be challenging. Students face so many obstacles in these formative years. More often than not, picking up a book to read on their own accord is one of those obstacles. By letting them CHOOSE what they want to read, this challenge will be made considerably easier.
Research shows that when you give a student options for a novel, and let them decide what their book is going to be, they feel better about the whole process of reading - immediately. We all know what losing yourself in a book feels like. My students deserve to experience that wondrous feeling. Students become better writers through consistent reading. The only way students will consistently read is if they're reading what they love.
Through your help, my students will be given a gift of choice. They can take a book home, they can experience new worlds, they can have doors open for them that have been previously closed. This past year many students fell in love with the first book of the "Uglies" series but were so disappointed that the next installment was not available. This project will fix that. And the "Wonder" series? Students were over the moon when they were able to choose that first novel, so much so that they were itching to read the next one, "Auggie & Me". With your help, they'll be able to get their hands on the next book in the series. Thank you for giving my students the gift of choice and helping them become better readers!
