My classroom is a self contained 5th grade classroom. We are together for seven hours a day-in one room. By the end of each school year we have taught and learned many lessons from each other. I truly care for each student that walks through my door, and they know this.
We are located in Chicago, in The Back of the Yards neighborhood. We are a low-income CPS school. Our students have needs which reach beyond the traditional classroom environment. Some days I act as their counselor, teacher, nurse, parent, friend, coach, and teacher.
School is a safe place for my students. My students help set up the classroom layout and decide how we should organize things. We have many flexible seating options. This helps make our room feel like a second home. At the end of the day we clean our own tables, boards, and floors to ensure we are respecting our learning space.
