My classroom is made up of high school special education students, many of whom did not have the privilege of growing up with a family, do not have family backing, and have to learn to process and grow with a multitude of odds stacked against them. My students, however, have so much empathy in part because they understand what it means to be different and in part because they know that life is about overcoming hurtles. They have learned to embrace the differences in others and have decided to help those in need out of the kindness of their hearts.
