During my small group instruction Diego raised his hand and said, "These black and white photo copied stories are a little boring. Can we read stories out of actual books." After hearing these words from Diego, I realized that in order to keep his attention and interest I needed to get books and get them fast.
My students deserve to read high interest fiction and nonfiction leveled books while working towards becoming fluent readers. As an intervention teacher, I serve students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 4 who are below and far below grade level. On a daily basis, I meet with small groups and work with them at their instructional reading level. I have been using leveled reading passages as well as photo copied level books. It is hard to keep students focused when they feel that what they are reading is boring.
There are many factors why my students are not meeting grade level standards. One of the reasons why they are not meeting grade level standards is because they are not able to read fluently, therefore, they need intensive small group instruction based on their actual needs. Through the use of running records, I figure out their instructional reading level. Once I figure out their instructional reading level, I plan focused strategic lessons using leveled reading material. Getting leveled fiction and nonfiction books will help facilitate my lessons and at the same time these books will appeal to my students' interest which in turn will help them become fluent readers.
Leveled reading books will make a difference in my students' ability become fluent readers.
