Just like our minds, our bodies are not meant to be stagnant. While chairs give students a place to sit, they do not give them a place to bloom and grow. I want to give my students the opportunity to learn where they can engage their whole mental and physical being.
Donations to this project will provide students a classroom that embraces the idea that in order to develop their minds, students need to be able to move their bodies. Flexible seating and fidget toys for our classroom will allow just that. By stimulating their balance systems, the children in my classroom are going to be more alert and focused on their learning goals. By engaging themselves in dynamic movement, instead of being forced to sit in stillness, the students will keep their muscles active and energized. By handling small stimulating fidget toys, physical energy can be appropriately channeled. In turn, the students will be able to flex and stretch the most important muscle in their bodies, their brains.
Body movement will become the norm in our classroom when wobble chairs and balance balls replace the traditional static, stiff plastic chairs in our classroom. Bouncy bands added to stool legs will engage the restless feet of students. Wobble cushions will give the opportunity to make movement happen around the classroom as students spread out during floor work (a student favorite). Still hands will be tacitly engaged with sensory toys for fidgeting that promote focus.
A body as rest stays at rest. A body in our new ergonomically activate seating will stay engaged. A body that tacitly manipulates fidget-friendly toys will stay alert. I look forward to giving my students the opportunity the make moving part of learning!
