My students are eager to learn middle school students in a low income community. This year we began drumming in music class and it has proved to be the most enjoyed activity we do while in music. When they line up for class, students will ask "Are we drumming today?" While in class, students are eager to help one another learn different parts and will also teach one another proper drum technique (i.e. how the drum should be held and played).
Since we do not have drum equipment, students have been using various sized buckets as drums. We currently have six buckets that we use in classes that have twenty-five students (average). When students do not have a "drum" to use they pat the rhythms on their legs. Although this can be an effective technique, students have to wait five to ten minutes before getting to play a drum.
