My class is a special education class consisting of kindergarten, first, and second graders. All the children in my class have significant developmental delays in multiple areas. One delay they all have in common is in the area of language development. This coupled with fine and gross motor challenges can make simply moving around the classroom and interacting with others a challenge. Having so many roadblocks to learning can cause frustration and it is easy for them to become overwhelmed. The unique challenge I have as a teacher of these curious, motivated, children is stripping away all these challenges so that they are able to access the core curriculum, on grade level in a meaningful way. Their challenges in life can be dealt with in isolation, but if they are to learn grade level content it needs to be without other obstacles. When this happens they get to be the joyful little humans they are meant to be!
