For several years, the tenth-grade students in my class have been assigned to read Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Every year I have many students give up on the book because it is either too difficult for them or they do not find it enjoyable. I believe that the themes in this book deserve the attention of my students, but teaching a book that many students aren't reading isn't effective. That's why I want to add other titles with similar themes but different reading levels and topics to their reading list for this unit. This project will provide students with choices for the books they want to read for a unit on diversity, equal justice, and tolerance. Giving these students a choice for what they can read will increase the likelihood that they will become engaged with their reading and complete their books. Besides learning valuable life lessons, this engagement with reading will help them develop their reading skills and encourage them to continue reading in the future.
