One of the major issues that lead to behavior problems is my students' inability to sit still. They have to move. I am requesting an opportunity to alleviate some behavioral issues as well as provide many students with special needs the benefit of flexible seating. So many of my students have difficulties and disabilities that prevent them from learning at their full capacity. Flexible seating allows for a more kinesthetic learning environment which creates many opportunities for students to be more productive and successful. Many of my students fidget constantly due to ADD or ADHD. These students could benefit greatly from a wobble chair, for example, without really distracting others as those immediately around them will be in the same learning environment.
With the choice that students get from flexible seating, students will be more engaged and intrinsically motivated toward success if they are able to choose a learning situation in which they are most comfortable, whether it be on a yoga ball, in a chair with a bouncy foot strap, on a wobbly chair, or on the floor. When a student is comfortable, they are more focused, calm and willing to learn.
Some additional benefits of flexible seating are that students are able to build a sense of community because they learn to share their space and take turns occupying different locations with different learning environments. Moreover, students need to move and when they cannot, many get distracted from the task at hand. Flexible seating allows for movement whether it be bouncing, kicking, twisting, or rocking. In the end, flexible seating will increase my students' literacy skills, motivation, engagement, and overall productivity in the classroom.
