I am the teacher of a classroom of fun and challenging first grade special education students! The students I get to spend my day with WANT to read! The kiddos face many challenges and have diagnoses of Specific Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance, and many have suffered some form of trauma in their young life.
Most of my kiddos lack the skills needed to become a successful independent reader. Since their knowledge and skills are not the same, it is important to provide differentiated teaching opportunities and books that are specific to their individual level. Many students struggle to focus and need opportunities to release extra energy!
Our school is located in a rural area and we are a high-poverty school district. Unfortunately, funding for extra items in the classroom is limited.
