Our school district is in a low income/high poverty area with students who have overcome many challenges both within the classroom and out in the community. As the School Counselor, I work with all students within our elementary school whether it is the whole class, individuals, or small groups.
Many of my students come to my room as a safe place for them to talk about what is going on in their lives, both in school and at home.
They are able to talk openly with me and be honest about what is going on and the struggles that they are facing in the classroom.
Many of the students I work with need a little bit of time to get back to their enthusiastic and energetic selves when upset. I strive to provide a place for my students to regroup and talk so that they are able to get back to their classroom and be fully engaged in their academics.
