My students attend a low socioeconomic inner-city high school in which they have not enjoyed many educational successes. The majority of my student population is composed of English learners who have not made adequate progress in their language skills to pass the minimum required prerequisites to exit the program. Since this means that they have been in the English learner program for at least 5 years, their motivation to actively participate in whole and/or small group instruction is generally low for fear of failing. However, every so often, they display a spark of interest that, with the right combination of tools, resources, and instruction, can be fanned into a burning love for learning. My students are so deserving, yet extremely underprivileged and in need of support to help lead them toward academic success.
