Part of the balanced math instruction students receive during small group is the introduction of new content vocabulary that often deals with the real world. Students can understand and increase their conceptual understanding of math instruction when they are able to to make connections. If I am teaching measurement or geometry to my students a great way to introduce this is by showing them a clip of construction workers in action using the some of the same tools they will be using in the learning!
The use of an iPad during small group instruction will enable students to experience real-world examples of newly acquired math terms right there in the moment. For many of our English language learners the use of visual examples is especially crucial for the understanding and processing of new information; the use of an iPad is a perfect tool to accomplish this.
Students also need to be able to manipulate groups of ten in order to see how numbers increase across the tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. We will be manipulating base ten blocks in small groups to better understand how we compose and decompose numbers.
