Center time allows students to grow in their social skills. During this time they are navigating their interactions with their peers. They are developing their self-awareness by managing their time, exploring their areas of interest and self-regulating. All of this is taking place during center time. In most classrooms centers are located in a specific area. However, with whiteboards, markers, cushions to sit on and other manipulatives that are easily transported, center time doesn't need a specific location but can be done anywhere once the right materials are present.
The centers are differentiated which take into account student interests and needs, by providing the level of support students require in order to complete a task and be successful.
Center time can develop a growth mindset. During center time our students are in safe place to make mistakes and can feel low-stress. With access to practice a skill over and over they develop a never give up attitude and are able to explore a previously taught skill with a friend or individually.
