Introducing fractions to 10 and 11 year old's has never evoked smiles, oohs and aahs, or captivated any of my 5th grade learners. Yet dumping out my sons pillow-case of assorted LEGO pieces has always led to a cacophony of conversation with eager fingers grasping for an opportunity to create!
LEGO's are visual, tactile, and nonthreatening! Unlike traditional teaching manipulatives, students already have happy memories with LEGO's and are not intimidated by them. Using these LEGO sets, students will be introduced to the concept of fractions, geometry, and graphing, allowing them to create, compare, identify, and make connections. Learning about parts and wholes, shapes, and graphing data with LEGO pieces, will be visually appealing and tactically invigorating.
The Storage bins will allow students to practice General Learner Outcome (GLO) skills as they take responsibility for their own learning in caring for these manipulatives in class. Also, borrowing a LEGO set to take home will allow for extended independent practice and continual learning.
