Where can you find firefighters, teachers, cashiers, police officers, veterinarians, office workers, doctors, mail carriers, nurses and chefs all happily working side-by-side? In a dramatic play area of a classroom, of course. Some may consider pretend play in a classroom to be fun and imaginative, but with limited or little educational value. The truth is, in the core of creating a restaurant together, or twirling around with friends in a fairy-tale land, stomping around in grown-up shoes, children are learning to solve problems, coordinate, cooperate, and think openly. Dramatic play experiences are some of the first ways children learn about their likes and dislikes, their interests, and their abilities. They experiment with role playing and work to make sense out of what they have observed in their world.
Dramatic play is an integral part of a well rounded preschool program as it is healthy for early childhood development.
Through dramatic play, children learn a multitude of important skills. I believe that play is natural and valuable experience of childhood development and it cannot be replaced by adult interaction.
