The students in this classroom have severe intellectual disabilities and are learning functional skills to help them become independent adults after they leave the special education program. We spend a lot of time working on skills our students will need - like filling out deposit slips, cooking, budgeting and counting money, and reading for pleasure and purpose!
Our students love coming to school and feel loved by their teachers. They have a lot of fun working with peer tutors - mainstream students who take part in our classroom and assist our students by modeling appropriate high school behavior. The peer tutors help my students get excited about learning things, even though my students have struggled their whole lives to master the basics.
Despite their disabilities, my students are some of the happiest and funniest kids around. They will bring a smile to your face. We spend a lot of time serving the rest of the school through our recycling program and like to go green!
