Most of my student's are from high levels of poverty and many of their parents didn't graduate from high school. Their background knowledge that most children have is lacking. Due to the negative outside impact of the world on their lives the parents and children have other things to focus on that many children in the surrounding areas don't have to worry about. Many of the children in my class are homeless, some live in the shelter, others in the hotel, and some live in a house with other families. My parents work hard to provide and meet the basic human needs which leaves minimal money for extra things. Which is why I try to expose them to various activities that they wouldn't be able to access normally. Also when children are worried about their safety or worried about how to get food it distracts them from being able to focus on the learning many of my students are significantly below grade level academically.
