Students who read do better in school and beyond. Period. While I still teach the classics, I also want students to experience modern, timely, high-interest topics in the books we explore this year in English 10. I want to buy a class set of books to use with my English 10 students. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas will allow students to connect, reflect, and discuss racial and social issues affecting communities today. My students will not only be better informed, but they'll also have a chance to interact with their peers and understand other people's viewpoints on sensitive, racially-driven topics.
