This lighting system will allow me to bring nature into my classroom. As the weather gets nicer, it is extremely hard to keep eighth grade students focused on their work. By encorporating a few of our science standards (human impact on the environment, reducing carbon footprints and sustainability of resources) into a gardening project, my goal is to enrich my students’ experiences and give them something to take home at the end of the year. Teaching in a low income school district, many of my students have never had the opportunity to grow a plant or their own, or even take care of another living thing. By using this grow-light system, I can show them how to be successful when propagating and growing plants from seeds. My goal is for each student to take home a plant at the end of the school year, and take home food from an outdoor community garden all summer long. The added oxygen in our classroom environment will benefit my students in too!
