I have 23 students all of whom receive free lunch. They come to school with no shoes, jackets, empty stomachs, and lots of heartache. Out of my 23 students 10 are homeless. They are 4th graders who are reading at a 2nd grade level, or not at all. My school gives out backpacks, clothes, shoes, and household items. I also volunteer my time to tutor some in literacy. Due to our high poverty level, our school is behind in technology as well. Most students do not have computers at home, they also do not know how to search the Internet, or even the basic thing like turn it on. What my students do have are hugs and smiles for me each day. They also have the drive to learn, and the willingness to try their best. They also have perfect attendance. No matter the challenge I put forth, they always come through. It is because of them that I do what I do for them. I work hard to help them no matter what.
