Students from my classroom are from a low socioeconomic area. For years, these students have struggled with reading because they were years below grade level. Because of their low reading level, several of these students developed behavioral issues and the vast majority of these students had no motivation to succeed academically.
These students were enrolled in a reading intervention class this year to attempt to raise these struggling readers to grade level. Students are instructed on their own level and complete the READ 180 program daily in 17 minute rotations, including a rotation in independent reading where they are able to choose their own novels. Students are also able to work one on one with a teacher because of the smaller class sizes.
In five short months, all of the students have shown growth in their reading level. It is often hard to keep our library stocked because of their new love of reading.
