I teach at an urban school that serves a population of students who come from all different backgrounds. More than 67% of my students qualify for free and reduced rate lunch. Many of the boys and girls in my classroom do not have positive role models in their lives and the young boys and girls are becoming young men and women who are searching for meaning in their life. My students have a love/hate relationship with school and many of my remediation English students were not given the love of reading they needed at a young age to grasp the power of a good book. I love to see my students light up when they finally realize that books can give you something no video game, television show or movie can. Many of the students in my remediation class have not passed the standardized tests that will allow them the opportunity to succeed in high school. My school is determined to close the achievement gap that exists and help all students be the best self they can be.
