First graders love to feel cozy and comfortable while using their imaginations to write wonderful stories. First graders are also easily distracted by movements and conversations in the classroom environment.
Privacy shields help students feel cozy during their writing time and also provide a vertical surface for word lists, mini charts, and other "tools" to help students with the writing process. We currently have student offices but they are falling apart from being used so much. Students love having their writing tools right in front of them as they work so they can quickly reference a chart or a word list as they write. I like that they do not have to flip through their folder to look for a tool -which optimizes their writing time. I put writing tools in a protective sleeve then use velcro to attach the sleeve to the interior of the office. This allows for flexibility and student differentiation.
All of this helps them to be more successful writers. Student offices also help students to stay focused by blocking out distracting noise and activities in the classroom.
