This year we launched a makerspace in the library at LMS. We wanted an exciting and engaging way to help 5th grade students meet our national library standards. So far, it has been a huge hit! Students love the opportunity to explore and be creative. My favorite moment so far was when a 5th grade girl squealed with delight after successfully completing a Snap Circuit project. She then looked at me and said, "Maybe I want to be an electrician when I get older?!" I almost cried. That is the goal of this project - to inspire students.
We have several makerspace stations that we would like to expand, resupply, and create. These stations are duct tape construction, origami, magnet exploration, snap circuit/electricity exploration, and a deconstruction zone.
