Five-year-olds learn best through collaboration. When they are working together to complete an activity, they are far more engaged. About half of my students will enter school this year speaking little or no English; but the expectations on them are the same as all other students at the end of the year.
Some students do enjoy working at a table and sitting or standing; but in my experience when offered other seating choices, the students are far more engaged when they have choices. I utilize games and collaborative activities to increase learning in my classroom. My students are paired as Ketcups and Mustards to complete activities together with both students contributing. I have a few choices available in my classroom now, but would like to provide more options for my students. I think the addition of wobble seats, stability balls, cushions, and yoga mats will add to my already active learning environment.
Seating choices helps students to take more ownership of their learning; and I want to be able to rearrange my classroom on the spot to best meet the needs of my students. I would like to have a large space for morning meeting, and multiple seating choices for when my students are working independently or in small groups. I love to see my students working together, spread throughout my classroom, so that they can work collaboratively and talk. My classroom is rarely a quiet place!
