High Interest /Low Level books are made for students who are reading below their grades reading level. These books contain subjects that are appropriate for their grade and interest level. When my students are able to read books in front of their peers without feeling embarrassed because they read at such a lower level than their peers, we have found success. These books will increase exposure to the words that my students need in order to increase their chances of learning them, and also their ability to read and comprehend more complex sentences.
High Interest-Low level books look like a typical book, and they are designed to have illustrations and text that appeal to a struggling reader's age group and grade level. However, they are written at a reading level that is lower than the student's grade level. Most of my students read well below grade level. Having High Interest books at their reading levels will keep my students reading verses shutting down.
