One of my classroom expectations is to respect each other and that begins with me. Respecting my students and their needs, choices, and ideas allows them to respect themselves and each other, which results in a safe classroom environment—ideal for positive student performance. Flexible seating is one area that provides students with choice in the location and type of seating they need to work individually and collaboratively. The bean bag chairs allow for students to be comfortable working individually. The stools help students who are prone to fall asleep in class and are easier to move around the room. This makes it easier for flexible grouping. The other stools, yoga balls, and chairs help kids that feel the need to move a little in class. It specifically helps kids diagnosed with ADHD to focus and gives them the freedom to move a little. The simple idea of allowing them to choose how and where they sit has the amazing power of improving motivation and confidence which in turn increases student achievement, social skills, and personal growth.
