We are a rural farming community. Our school serves students in grades 5th through 8th. Within the population, 17% are students with disabilities and 80% are economically disadvantaged. Our students often lack in some of the basics such as a solid breakfast and clean clothes for school the next day so we provide free breakfast and lunch to all children in the school district. Because of declining enrollment, our school also receives less funding than it did 5 to 10 years ago, and it continues to face a budget crisis. Despite these challenges, my students are leaders in their own learning paths and care deeply about their community.
