"Be kind, and read every day." That's what I try to teach my students, because I think those two actions can transform a person's life - and if enough people chose them, we could change the world. I'm changing the world 150 tweens at a time, teaching junior high English at the School for Creative and Performing Arts, in Cincinnati, Ohio. We welcome students living in poverty and students living in wealth, from every neighborhood and culture and race and religion and point of view and level of academic skill in the city - as long as you love to create or perform, you're welcome here. What we're doing will change our city. Kids who might have gotten lost in the cracks anywhere else, kids who don't fit in, kids who don't have enough, kids with big problems, find their voices at SCPA, and grow up into adults who will change the world. It's an honor to teach reading here.
